Bobby Sabatino had three of John Carroll's 12 hits, but a tough defensive day for the Blue Streaks proved costly
Box Score
Taking into account that the lack of playing outdoors is sometimes a tough transition for a "northern" baseball team to make coming down to the Sunshine State, it was still difficult to swallow how much defensive miscues cost the John Carroll baseball team Monday afternoon against Moravian.
Nine errors, including several in the late innings, may have ultimately been the difference in what became an 8-5 loss in 11 innings to the Moravian Geyhounds at the North County Regional Park in Port Charlotte, Florida.
JCU trailed for most of regulation as JCU's
Andrew Doring and Moravian's Roberto Solano were engaged in a pitcher's duel. Doring struck out nine yet still left the game on the wrong end of a 3-1 score in the seventh inning. He allowed just four hits, and none after the first batter of the third inning.
Bobby Sabatino, who had John Carroll's first RBI in the fifth inning, got the Blue Streaks closer in the seventh when his ground out in the seventh scored
Joe Veltri, who had triple in the previous at bat.
Still down 3-2, John Carroll used a three-run eighth to take a 5-3 lead.
Connor Marrero came through with the game-tying RBI on a double, which was followed by a pair of unearned runs that played
David Lykens and Marrerro.
The top of the ninth started out innocently enough with two quiet outs. But a walk kept the inning alive, and then a costly error set the table. Back-to-back singles by Matt Hanson and Ryan Luke tied the game at 5-5 and sent the contest into extra innings.
Moravian broke the game open in a wild top of the 11th, when the Greyhounds benefitted from four errors, including two after two out. Three runs crossed the plate to spot Moravian an 8-5 lead.
The Blue Streaks got two baserunners on in the bottom half of the frame, but no further damage was inflicted.
John Carroll (3-3) outhit Moravian 12-8 with Sabatino (three hits) and
Mitchell Herringshaw (two hits) leading the way.
