Box Score 2 Seniors are meant to lead by example, and in perhaps the most important start of his career as a Blue Streaks,
Patrick O'Brien did just that.
His brilliant two-hit shutout in the first game set the tone for what became a sweep as John Carroll downed Otterbein University, 1-0 and 11-3, in Ohio Athletic Conference baseball action at Schweickert Field.
O'Brien allowed just two hits to hand the visting Cardinals their first shutout loss of the 2013 campaign. It was Otterbein's first scoreless game since dropping a 4-0 decision to eventual national champion Marietta on April 17, 2012.
The senior struck out five and walked none in improving to 3-0 on the year.
The lone run of the game took place in the bottom of the third. With two out and no one on base,
Tyler Gentile singled to bring up
Mitchell Herringshaw, who promptly doubled to left center to bring home Gentile.
JCU produced six hits but could not add to the lead. O'Brien, however, was up to the task, as he allowed just one base runner over the final four innings.
The Blue Streaks used the momentum of the dramatic 1-0 win to finish the sweep in the nightcap. A three-run double by Herringshaw staked John Carroll to a 3-1 lead in the third.
It was still 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth but the Streaks scored three times in the bottom of that frame, once in the seventh and three more times in the eighth to blow the game open.
Herringshaw had three RBI, Gentile scored three runs, and
Chet Lauer had three hits to pace the offense.
Andrew Doring struck out a career-high matching nine batters to improve to 3-0.
John Carroll is now 18-9 overall and 7-3 (3rd place) in the OAC, while Otterbein slips to 19-9 and 6-4 (4th place) in league play.
