Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The two games were remarkably similar in that they were long decided before actually ending. But the big difference was how each team experienced both ends of the lopsided victory spectrum.
John Carroll brought the lumber in an 11-0 victory in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheade Tuesday afternoonr, while Case Reserve returned the favor with an 18-8 hammering in the nightcap at Schweickert Field.
The first game was a highlight reel for
Jimmy Spagna in particular. In the first inning, after
Mitchell Herringshaw doubled home
Joe Veltri for the first run, Spagna singled in Herringshaw for the second.
In the third inning, with Herringshaw already on bases after sending
Bobby Sabatino home with a single, Spagna parked a home run over the wall in deep center for a 5-0 JCU lead.
In the fifth inning, Spagna and
David Crowley left the yard in back-to-back. Spagna homered to left field with herringshaw on to put JCU ahead 7-0, after which Crowley went out of the park over the right field scoreboard for an 8-0 JCU lead.
Later that inning,
Mark Huddle brought home
Ryan Konsler with the Blue Streaks' ninth run.
Capping the scoring, and Spagna's career day, was a triple that scored Veltri and Herringshaw. That gave Spagna a box score line that read 4-4 with two runs and seven RBI.
Anthony LapAglia's effort on the mound was somewhat lost in the wake of the offensive fireworks. The freshman improved to 7-0 on the year with a four-hit shutout.
Anthony Libertini worked a 1-2-3 seventh to preserve the blank slate.
Game two went the opposite direction, as the Spartans scored 14 times in the first four innings to put the game away. JCU did manage eight runs, but never threatened the visitors as the split was sealed early.
Spargna added two more RBI, while
Connor Marrero was 2-4 with two runs scored.
JCU is now 21-12 on the year.
