Balanced Team Effort Leads Men's Basketball Past Baldwin Wallace

| By:
David Hendrickson made a 3-pointer on four straight Blue Streak possessions in the first half.
Box Score The John Carroll University men's basketball team carried over the late-game momentum they demonstrated in Saturday's game against Wilmington, when they came back from an 11-point deficit to tie the Fightin' Quakers with two minutes left in the game.

The Blue Streaks won 71-69 against cross-town rival and projected first place OAC finisher Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday night in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

"It's a great confidence booster for us," said assistant coach Frank O'Brien. "We knew these guys were struggling a little bit. They were the preseason pick for the conference. They are very, very talented and experienced. Coach Moran is so proud of the kids."

John Carroll continues their home win streak (3-0) and tastes redemption after losing to BW their last three consecutive meetings.

In the first half, John Carroll shot 63 percent from the field to build a 5-point lead at the half way point, 41-36.

JCU junior David Hendrickson hit four consecutive 3-pointers to put the Blue Streaks on a 14-2 run with seven minutes left in the half.

"I got open at first," said Hendrickson. "The next one kind of came. We needed a little bit of a spark so luckily I provided it today."

John Carroll's perimeter defensive pressure kept the Yellow Jackets outside shooters from connecting in the first half.  BW was 0 for 11 from the 3-point line in the opening stanza.

Starting sophomore Joey Vuyancih's two free throws with 21 seconds remaining made it a two possession game at 71-67.

OAC leading scorer Jaron Crowe immediately responded, cutting JCU's lead to two.
Kyle Payne's game-tying jumper was off the mark as time expired.

Simon Kucharewicz, the OAC leader in shooting percentage, led the Blue Streaks with 14 points.  Junior Jake Hollinger added 13 points as John Carroll's top two forwards had their way in the paint.  The duo finished 12 of 18 shooting on the night.

Hollinger and Vuyancih tied for the team-lead with seven rebounds.  It marked the third straight game a guard has led the Blue Streaks in rebounds or tied for the lead in rebounds.

"This feels really, really good because they beat us twice last year," said Hollinger. "It just feels so good. I have a spot in my heart for BW. They have some great players. It was a great team and a defensive effort."

For the game, John Carroll finished shooting 49.1 percent while Baldwin Wallace was 3 for 22 on 3-pointers. JCU added eight blocks. The Blue Streaks are ranked 14th in the nation in blocks per game.

John Carroll will look to continue their home win streak this Saturday against Marietta at 2 p.m.
