Women's Swimming And Diving Tops Hiram

Relays prove to be a key in swimming and diving given their point value in the overall team score.

The John Carroll University women's swimming and diving team set the tone in its two relay events in a dual meet with Hiram to take the 121-105 win on Friday evening.

JCU's Margaret Zagrobelny, Sara Needham, Rachael Libertin and Katii Sheffield to a near 33-second victory in the 400 medley relay to start the meet.

The quartet of Amanda Casamatta, Lindsey Fano, Victoria Watson and Lindsay Eddingfield would pick up the other 11 points awarded to the first-place relay team with a 4:22.64 mark in the 400 freestyle relay.

Hiram's Becca Wright and Megan McBratnie pulled the Terriers within six points at the conclusion of the 100 butterfly but John Carroll responded by finishing one-two in each of the next two races.

Sheffield took the 100 freestyle clocking in at 1:03.18 just ahead of Libertin, the reining OAC Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week. The 100 backstroke featured a lighting fast finish with Fano out-touching Zagrobelny by 22 hundredths of a second.

Fano found herself in another tightly contested finish in the 50 free with Watson taking first at 29.29 and Fano right behind at 29.50.

The Blue and Gold would go on to win three more races on the night. Sheffield picked up wins in both the 100 (1:03.18) and 200 freestyles (2:17.38) while Libertin took a 12-second win in the 200 individual medley.

John Carroll returns home on Saturday to take on Baldwin Wallace at 1 p.m. Prior to the meet the Blue Streaks will honor their seniors starting at 12:45 p.m.
