At the midway point of conference play, every point becomes more critical with teams vying for separation from the pack.
Â
The John Carroll University women's soccer team rallied back from a 2-goal deficit but could not pull ahead in a 2-2 draw with visiting Marietta College on Saturday night inside Don Shula Stadium.
Â
Both teams had plenty of offensive opportunities but it was not until the 57th minute that one of the teams would find the back of the net.
Â
Marietta's Stevie Reilly punctured through the JCU defense with a header in the 57th minute, which resulted in a goal for the Pioneers. The header came off of a feed into the box from Mo Ruff after a JCU foul.
Â
Reilly seemed to find the JCU's weakness and scored another goal 10 minutes later, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead over the Blue Streaks. Sydney Willis set up the goal beating JCU's defense and sliding the ball to Reilly.
Â
Sophomore
Preston Mendel rallied JCU back. Forty-four seconds after Reilly's second goal, Mendel finished a free ball sent into the box from
Andrea Regrut.
Â
Mendel kept things interesting when she got a second chance on an uncontested breakaway, but just missed the goal, deflecting the ball off the goalpost.Â
Â
The Chagrin Falls, Ohio then worked hard for another breakaway with 76th minute, scoring her second goal of the game. The game-tying goal was set up by a double assist from
Danielle Sharbaugh and
Maggie Reilly. It marked the second multi-goal game by a Blue Streak.
Â
Neither team could score in the rest of the half forcing overtime.
Â
In the first overtime, John Carroll had a few chances to end the game, while Marietta could not muster any offensive chances. The Blue Streaks had four shots on goal, while the Pioneers had none.
Â
Marietta had a prime chance to win the game to pick up its second win of the season but could not come through in the second extra period.
Â
The Pioneers' Ali Kowal made Blue Streak goalkeeper
Haley McDonald make a sliding save in the 109th minute. Marietta's Sydney Willis collected the rebound and could not connect on the would-be game-winner sending the ball well over the crossbar with McDonald still on the ground.
Â
McDonald, the OAC leader in saves, finished with 11 in the game.
Â
John Carroll's record stands at 9-3-2 while Marietta's record is 1-12-2 after the tie. The Blue Streaks sit in a tie for third in the OAC while the Pioneers rank seventh.
Â
John Carroll will be back in action on Tuesday in Berea, Ohio as the team will take on the Baldwin Wallace at 7 p.m.
