Simon Kucharewicz recorded his third double-double of the season.
Box Score After losing three of four games to end the month of January, the month of February had certainly been more kind to the Blue Streaks. The Blue Streaks were 3-0 in February before falling to 3-1 with a hard-fought, 79-75 loss to the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets at Ursprung Gynasium on Wednesday night.
Â
With the loss, the Blue Streaks have now lost four of their last five contests against the Yellow Jackets.
Â
The Blue and Gold (14-8, 8-7 OAC) started the game with an early 12-5 advantage following a 3-pointer from freshman
David Linane. JCU maintained that seven-point lead 28 points later, as they led 30-23 with just three minutes left before halftime. The Yellow Jackets (12-10, 8-7 OAC) would trim the deficit to five, 35-30, going into halftime.
Â
Early in the second half, the Yellow Jackets tied the game at 37 with a pair of Kyle Payne free throws. The Blue Streaks would eventually reclaim the lead, as they led 53-49 with 12:34 left in the game.
Â
Four minutes later, with 8:19 remaining, the two teams were tied at 59, and it seemed as if this was another classic rivalry game that would go right down the wire.
Â
And then the Yellow Jackets caught fire.
Â
Tied at 59, the Yellow Jackets went on a 16-1 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Jaron Crowe, the fifth leading scorer in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Â
Trailing 75-60 with just 3:21 left, the Blue Streaks' hopes looked dim. But, as the old adage goes, "it isn't over until it's over."
Â
The Blue and Gold responded with a 13-2 run of their own, trimming the deficit to just four, 77-73, with 39 seconds remaining.
Â
After the Blue Streaks were forced to foul, Crowe went 1-of-2 at the free throw line to keep JCU's hopes alive. JCU sophomore
Joey Vuyancih went 2-of-2 at the line, making it a one-possession game, 78-75.
Â
On the Yellow Jackets' ensuing possession, they turned the ball over and allowed the Blue Streaks one last opportunity to tie the game. Junior
David Hendrickson attempted a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining, but couldn't knock down the shot. One more free throw for the Yellow Jackets on the opposite end gave them a four-point lead, and cemented the 79-75 victory.
Â
Vuyancih led the Blue Streaks offensively, scoring 19 points while going 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Sophomore
Simon Kucharewicz recorded his third double-double of the season as he reeled in 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Hendrickson finished with 12 points on the night.
Â
With only three games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Blue Streaks will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 as they host the Wilmington College Quakers at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 3:00 p.m.
