Men's Basketball Pierces Student Princes Behind Sharp Second Half Shooting

The John Carroll University men's basketball team can strike in a hurry.

Backed by four straight 3-pointers in the second half John Carroll fought off an energetic Heidelberg squad 83-66 on Wednesday evening inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio. The win was the 10th-straight in the series for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll's second platoon sparked the Blue and Gold early coming in and going on a 7-0 run to make it 12-4 game with 15:33 left in the opening half. John Cirillo led the charge scoring four points.

The first platoon forwards, Doug Caputo and Jake Hollinger, teamed up on a 6-0 run to push the Blue Streak's lead to 10 with 11:15 remaining in the opening half.

An 8-0 run for Heidelberg after a timeout cut John Carroll's lead 18-16 with 9:38 remaining in the first half.

Heidelberg kept up its surge with a 12-0 run capped by a Chris Moxley layup giving the Student Princes their first lead of the game 26-24 at the 4:31 point in the first half. John Carroll answered with a 10-0 run led by senior David Hendrickson who scored seven consecutive points.

Hendrickson came alive over the final four minutes of the first half with all 10 of his points to help his team to a 39-33 halftime lead.

"He's a great player," said assistant coach Frank O'Brien. "He's got to take it one game at a time and keep on getting better."

Heidelberg went on a 9-0 run to start the second half to take a 42-39 lead over the Blue Streaks. The Student Princes also went on another 7-0 run with 15:03 remaining in the second half pushing their lead to five.

John Carroll hit 3-pointer on four straight possessions to take a 56-52 lead with 10:32 remaining. Will Starks capped the stretch with back-to-back trifectas.

"You hit the long ball, it always picks things up," said O'Brien. We were struggling a little bit. The guys had a lot of perseverance and it was really a team effort. It was a nice team victory."

The Blue Streaks used an 11-0 run to pull away opening up a 12-point lead with just over five minutes remaining. David Linane scored seven of the 11 points in that stretch making it a 69-57 game.
