Capping a week stretch with four games the John Carroll University men's basketball team looked to end the week with a well-balanced effort.
Â
Twelve players found the scoring column as John Carroll (8-3) easily defeated SUNY-Potsdam 93-57 in the consolation game of the Hilbert Hawks Tip-Off Tourney on Sunday afternoon in Hamburg, N.Y.
Â
John Carroll responded in a big way exploding for 55 first half points including shooting 10-for-16 from behind the arc.
"If there's one thing that's been consistent with this team, it's been resiliency," said assistant coach
Frank O'Brien. "We dropped that tough game early in the year in the tournament. We came back the second day and played very well. We're very disappointed in our outcome yesterday. The kids responded less than 24 hours later, hitting 16 3-pointers. We ran the floor well and rebounded well."
Â
Leading the way was sophomore
David Linane. Linane scored 18 points in the first half shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field. The sophomore came through in a big way scoring the Blue and Gold's final 11 points of the frame over the last 2:09.
"David's a special player," said O'Brien. "He's going to be a great point guard for us in the next two and half years. We're very happy for him."
Â
Linane would earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
Â
John Carroll raced out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and never looked back.
Â
The Blue Streaks pushed their lead to 15 with a 7-0 run capped by five straight points off the hand of junior
Danny Wallack.
Â
John Carroll would open up a 29-point halftime lead after Linane's run.
Â
The Blue Streaks would push their lead to 30 for good on a pair of free throws from
Ryan Farragher with 11:33 remaining in the game. A 3-pointer from Wallack with 7:45 remaining had the Blue and Gold up by a game-high 45 points.
Â
Junior
Will Starks added a career-best 17 points finishing 7-for-11 from the field. Wallack joined Linane and Starks in double digits with 14 points including a team-best four trifectas.
Said O'Brien on Starks, "It was a matter of time before he was going to go off like that. He's been shooting tremendously in practice. In games, he's finally started to find the bottom of the net. We're very happy for him. There's nobody that works harder at shooting than Will."
Â
As a team, eight different players buried a 3-pointer as the team would finish16-of-31 from behind the arc.
Â
John Carroll returns home to take on Muskingum at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11. The game will be part of the Blue Streaks' alumni day for the men's basketball program. For alumni day information and to RSVP please click
