Stringing together victories and forming winning streaks is what separates the better teams from their competition.
The John Carroll University men's soccer team won its third consecutive game against visiting Heidelberg, 3-0, on Tuesday evening inside Don Shula Stadium. The conference win maintains JCU's perfect home record (4-0) and keeps them in the top-half of the OAC standings.
Sophomore
Jesse Marinaro jumpstarted the JCU offensive attack with a clutch head-shot goal early in the second half to give the team a lead that would last for the duration of the game.
Rain and blustery weather conditions played a significant role in the shortage of offense from both teams in the scoreless first half. The Blue Streaks had nine shots in the opening period, five of which were shots on goal. Freshman
Liam McIntosh kept the Student Prince offense in check with a trio of saves.
Six minutes into the second half, and John Carroll broke through for the first goal of the game thanks to Marinaro netting his fifth score of the season on a nifty pass and assist from
Kirk Ring. Marinaro is only a goal away from reaching the double-digit plateau for his brief two-year career.
In the 77
th minute, senior
Jimmy Mattina scored his third goal of the season on an assist from
Shaq Bridges. Moments later, freshman
Andrew Frank chipped in his second collegiate goal to expand the margin to three. The two scores gave the Blue Streaks breathing room heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
The remainder of the contest featured a pair of stingy defenses battling it out for a chance at an OAC victory. JCU prevailed and secured the shutout thanks to a five-save night from McIntosh. The JCU defensive core consisting of Mattina,
Tristan Lyles, and
Jared Vidika held the Student Princes offense to only six shots on the evening.
Head coach
Hector Marinaro decided to move the midfielder position up higher in the second half as an adjustment to the opening period.
"We played a great 90 minutes of defense, and a great 45 minutes of offense. We came out flat, but I thought we played with a lot more urgency and conviction in the second half." said Marinaro after the game.
Next up, the Blue Streaks will play the latter half of their two-game home stand when they play host to Marietta College on Saturday at 7 pm.
