The John Carroll women's soccer team had a chance at a major upset entering the second half of Saturday's contest against conference unbeaten Capital. They fell just short on the road.
Capital scored the lone second half goal and defeated the Blue Streaks, 2-1, at Bernlohr Stadium in Bexley, Ohio.
JCU falls to 4-11-2 overall and 2-4-1 in OAC play. Capital improves to 11-4 and stays undefeated in conference play ay 7-0.
Preston Mendel got the scoring going in the 14th minute with a shot that bounced off the bar before hitting the keeper and finding the net. That goal was her third on the season. Capital responded six minutes later with a Becca Cartmill score.
The score stayed level until Claire Quinn gave the Crusaders the lead with a goal two minutes into the second half. Her free kick from just outside the box was the game-winner. JCU was outshot 20-9 in the contest, and
Rhianna Guarnera recorded four saves.
John Carroll returns home for a match with Mount Union on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. before celebrating Senior Day on Saturday against Muskingum at 7:00 p.m.
