Covering a span of 16 matches that dates back to 2002, John Carroll has known nothing but misery when taking on Otterbein University.
In an Ohio Athletic Conference quarterfinal round match-up Monday evening in Westerville, the tables at long last dramatically turned.
A goal by
Dre Regrut in the 49th minute from 30 yards out proved to be the difference as the #6 seed John Carroll Blue Streaks upset the #3 seed Otterbein Cardinals, 1-0.
Otterbein had the statistical edge in every relevant category (16-5 in shots, 12-0 in corners) except for two: The scoreboard, and saves.
Rhianna Guarnera, who was 3-1-1 in her last five starts entering postseason, was magnificent between the pipes this evening, making nine saves -- her second highest total of the season and her most in a shutout.
JCU and Otterbein played to a 0-0 draw in which the Cardinals launched seven shots to the Blue Streaks' two. But Regrut seized an opportunity and drilled a high shot from long range for her second goal of the season.
John Carroll's defense did an outstanding job of not allowing clear looks, although a few opportunities passed without harm for the Blue Streaks.Â
The host squad had a handful of chances over the remaining 41 minutes but could not get the equalizer.
The 1-0 win was the the first for John Carroll over Otterbein since a 2-0 victory in the 2001 OAC Tournament. That was the last year John Carroll won the postseason title.
The win advances the Blue Streaks into the semifinal round of the OAC Tournament, which puts John Carroll against #2 seed Ohio Northern on Wednesday, November 4, at 7:00 pmÂ
