No one could have imagined a goal scored in the first 65 seconds of tonight's Ohio Athletic Conference quarterfinal round match between visiting Mount Union and host John Carroll would decide who would advance to the semifinals on Thursday.
Imagination became reality, however, as that early goal held up in what became a 1-0 victory for the Blue Streaks.
The quick strike was scored by sophomore
Dalton Browsky, who found the back of the net for the eighth time this season. Sophomore
Jesse Marinaro was credited with the assist, his eighth on the year.
The play began innocently enough as Marinaro threaded a pass to Browsky, who took a straight forward path toward the goal. Browsky struck a low ball to the right side, which Mount Union keeper Dylan Lias was able to slow down but not stop. The ball had enough momentum to cross the goal line for what proved to be the winning tally.
Despite Browsky's goal, the first half played out fairly even, with both teams taking four shots and five corner kicks.
The second half had several moments of drama. In the 65th minute of the game, the Blue Streaks were under the impression they had scored, but an offsides call wiped out what appeared to be an insurance goal.
Just shortly after, in the 70th minute, John Carroll had the opportunity for a penalty kick. Sophomore
Jake Lombardo was stonewalled by Lias diving to the right. Both Lias and freshman
Liam McIntosh finished the game with six saves.
Mount Union also had some opportunities late, but McIntosh made some great plays to preserve the shutout. John Carroll finished with 15 shots, while Mount Union ended with 12.
JCU finished with a total of eleven corner kicks, and UMU with eight.
With their win, the third seeded Blue Streaks (13-4-1) will travel to Bexley, Ohio, to take on second seeded Capital University (9-8-1) in the OAC Tournament semifinal round at a time to be determined.
Mount Union had its season end at 9-8-1.
