Men's Basketball Continues Historic Start with Convincing OAC Win

It has been over a decade since the John Carroll men's basketball program has won at least seven consecutive games to start the season

That was back in 2004-05, and in that particular season, the Blue Streaks ripped off 13 consecutive wins en route to an NCAA "Sweet 16" showing.

Eleven years have passed, and the Blue Streaks have once again found a formula for early season dominance.

JCU defeated Ohio Northern by a score of 86-68 on Saturday afternoon in Ada, Ohio.

This was just the eight win in program history for John Carroll on Ohio Northern's home floor, and just the second by more than 12 points

Senior Simon Kucharewicz led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. The point guard duo of David Linane and Ryan Farragher combined for 29 points, nine assists, and 10 rebounds.

The Blue Streaks now have a 7-0, 2-0 OAC record while ONU falls to 4-3 and 1-1 OAC.

A well-balanced and aggressive scoring attack gave the Blue and Gold a 6-0 advantage after only two minutes of play. Six minutes later, Tony Vuyancih drained a three-pointer to bring the lead to 24-15. The Blue Streaks led by as many as 24 points in the first half.

At the intermission, JCU led 49-30. The team combined for a 45 percent field goal percentage while holding the opposition to a 31 percent mark. Eight different John Carroll players registered at least three points in the half.

JCU was able to fend off an early Ohio Northern second-half run and maintain a comfortable lead in the beginning of the period. Sophomore Brian Papich contributed on the defensive end with four steals and a block to earn himself four free throws.

A John Cirillo layup brought the lead to 73-45, the largest of the game.

The remaining 10 minutes in the contest was more of the same offensive and defensive command from the Blue Streak lineup.

Forward Konnor Baker led the Polar Bears with 16 points on the day.

The Blue Streaks have another Saturday afternoon road trip next week as they will take on Wilmington College at 3 pm inside the Fred Raizk Arena.
