Men's Basketball Cruises Past Otterbein

John Carroll history was matched on Wednesday night.

With the John Carroll University men's basketball team's 107-67 win over Otterbein, both the men's and women's programs reached double digit Ohio Athletic Conference wins in the same season for just the second time ever in John Carroll history. The win, the men's 10th in conference play, marked the first time the occasion has occurred since the 1993-94 season.

"We tip our hats to our women and coach Kelly Morrone for the great season they are having," said assistant coach Frank O'Brien. "Coach Moran preached to our guys the last few days about bouncing back strong and the players responded in a big way."

Six players reached double figures for John Carroll as the Blue Streaks rolled from the opening tip. David Hendrickson and Will Starks finished with 20 points each, one shy of the duo's career-bests.

Jake Hollinger added 14 points with Doug Caputo, Ryan Farragher and Danny Wallack all contributing 11.

Different players heated up scoring their points in bunches for the Blue Streaks to stake John Carroll to a 60-34 halftime lead. It marked the first time John Carroll had scored 60 points in the opening 20 minutes since the Alma game last season.

Said O'Brien, "Our two seniors set the tone with outstanding games and the rest of the team followed their lead."

Hollinger led the charge early with the senior scoring 11 points within first nine minutes of the game. The last basket in the stretch, a layup would help John Carroll go on a 10-0 run to open up a 33-19 lead with just over nine minutes left in the half. Starks would clean up the run with five points.

Enter Hendrickson, Hollinger's senior counterpart.

The Saline, Mich. native would play a major role in a 10-2 run late in the first half. Hendrickson scored eight straight John Carroll points to make it a 45-27 game with 5:05 remaining in the half.

John Carroll would add a 12-0 run at the end of the half with Tony Vuyancih scoring the final four points of the stretch.

The Blue Streaks added another 10-0 run behind a balanced effort from the first platoon early in the second half. The streak put John Carroll 80-49 with 11:22 remaining in the game. The second platoon would tally the biggest run of the night, a 14-0 tally.

In all, 12 players would score for the Blue and Gold. David Linane added seven assists as JCU would go on to distribute 23 as a team.

John Carroll's last 40-point win was a 104-62 decision over Muskingum on December 22, 2012.

The Blue Streaks improved to 14-5, 10-3 OAC with the win while the Cardinals fell to 3-17, 2-11 OAC.

John Carroll returns home to host Capital at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.
