The hit parade was a loud one today for the John Carroll softball team.
On a day when the Blue Streaks collected 16 hits, the fact that five were home runs played a significant part in a sweep over Muhlenberg (6-2) and Potsdam State (8-0).
In the opener, JCU scored twice in the second on a home run by
Hannah Mizener, then plated three runs in the fifth to blow the game open on a home run by
Alyssa Coleman.
All the run support aided
Rachel Byrnes, who collected her second victory in as many starts this season. Byrnes worked seven innings and allowed just four hits and two runs, striking out nine and walking two.
Byrnes became just the third JCU pitcher in program history to reach 300 career strikeouts, joining Brittany Danilov (684) and Kristin Platz (324) as the only members of that club at JCU. Byrnes now has 305 strikeouts to her credit as a Blue Streak.
In the nightcap, the Blue Streaks made quick work of Potsdam State, finishing the game in five innings. Mizener, Coleman and Simecek all hit home runs, with Semecek going a perfect three-for-three at the plate.Â
Mizener and
Lauren Cianciolo each scored a pair of runs to help AnnMarie Kirchner post her first pitching victory as a Blue Streak, improving to 1-1 on the young season.
John Carroll is now 3-1 on this year's Florida trip, and gets a day off tomorrow before playing three consecutive days of doubleheaders Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
