Goalkeeping, Third Quarter Surge Leads To First Home Win Of Year For Men's Lacrosse

The John Carroll University men's lacrosse team enjoyed a lot of success at home in its inaugural season. That had not been the case this season prior to tonight.

Outstanding goalkeeping and a third quarter surge led John Carroll to a 10-8 win over Albion on Tuesday night in University Hts., Ohio.

Sophomore Kyle Lake had a standout performance for the Blue Streaks. The goalkeeper made 19 saves on the night setting the single-game program record.

John Carroll came out with a purpose, attacking the Albion defenders with aggression. The early aggression paid off with a goal from Ryan Kelly with 11:26 remaining in the first period. Kelly's goal would be set up by freshman Casey Green. Green tacked onto the lead with a goal four minutes later, the first of his college career.

The Britons answered with two goals in a 14-second stretch to tie up the game at two with 6:32 remaining in the half.

MacGregor Roberts put the Blue Streaks back in front with 4:30 left in the first. The lead would not hold. Albion rattled off two consecutive goals to give the Britons' their first lead with a minute left in the quarter. Declan O'Grady tied the contest back up at four a piece with a goal despite being checked by the Albion defenders.

After a high-paced first quarter, things slowed down a little bit in the second in terms of scoring as both teams ramped up the intensity on defense.

O'Grady picked up his second goal of the game with 7:44 to go in the half. It turned out to be the only goal scored in the quarter. A potential last-second goal at the horn by O'Grady was ultimately waved off by the referees.

Keegan Flinter picked up where O'Grady left off, and started the second half scoring with an unassisted goal two minutes into the third to give John Carroll a 6-4 lead. Collin Rice found the back of the net for the sixth time this year less than a minute later to push the lead to 7-4.

Right when the Blue Streaks were prepped to take control of the game, Albion once again got two consecutive goals to cut the John Carroll lead to 7-6.

Rice had an answer. The freshman attacker put in his second goal of the game and seventh of the season with 3:22 left in the quarter to push the lead back to two goals. A John Carroll penalty late in the quarter gave the Britons another opportunity but the Blue Streaks were able to kill off the man-up opportunity. Kelly scored with 10 seconds remaining in the stanza to push the lead to three at 9-6.

Albion stayed in striking distance. A goal by Cameron Bruan made the contest a two-goal affair with 12:27 remaining. After a penalty by the Britons, O'Grady secured a hat trick on the man-up opportunity for his team-leading 17th goal of the season. The goal pushed the Blue Streaks' advantage to 10-7.

A late goal from the Britons' Alexander Dziewit with 1:28 left to go in the game gave Albion one last shot at making a late run. The Blue Streaks killed off the remaining 88 seconds off the clock to grab their first home win of the season.

John Carroll improves to 4-3 with the win while Albion fell to 4-3 with the loss.

John Carroll remains at home and will host Olivet at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.
