There was a close game and a rout, but both count the same as conference road wins for the John Carroll softball team as the Blue Streaks swept a pair of games at Wilmington Sunday.
JCU escaped with a 4-3 win in the opener before putting away game two by a 12-2 count in five innings.
The Blue Streaks simply could not shake the Quakers in the first game, taking leads of 2-0 and 3-2 only to be matched both times. It took a big hit in the top of the sixth to break the tie for good.
Mikki Vance reached base on an outfield error, and advanced all the way to third base. She was still there with two outs, but
Lauren Cianciolo delivered an RBI single to put the visiting Streaks out front, 4-3.
Rachel Byrnes made the lead stick by retiring the final six Wilmington batters she faced to improve to 6-3 on the year. Byrnes allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned), striking out three and walking one.
Carly Simecek went 3-4 and
Alyssa Coleman had two RBI in the first game to lead the JCU offense.
The Blue Streaks scored early and often in game two. Simeceka nd
Hannah Mizener both had RBI hits in the first, second and third inning as JCU moved out to a 10-0 lead and coasted to the 12-2 win. Simecek finished the game 3-3 with three runs and six RBI. while Mizener's line read 3-3 with three runs and three RBI.
AnnMarie Kirchner and
Brianna Lach comnined to allow just two runs on five hits.
The Blue Streaks improved to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the OAC. Wilmington fell to 5-17 and 1-3 in league play.
