Just for a few minutes, the John Carroll women's lacrosse team did not resemble the squad that had put in 57 goals over its last three outings.
As soon as the first goal went in, the resemblance looked familiar. John Carroll scored a program record 22 goals in a 22-4 victory over Defiance Tuesday evening at Shula Stadium.
The visiting Yellow Jackets led 2-0 after two quick goals in the opening four minutes. That lead held for nearly nine minutes.
Grace Curatolo broke the drought at the 21:08 mark with an unassisted goal to get JCU on the board.Â
The fuse was clearly lit. Curatolo,
Gina Vilsack,
Olivia Marsh, and
Roserita DiMillo all had a hand in an 8-0 run over a five minute and three second span that turned a two-goal deficit into a six goal lead.
Jacqueline Burns stopped the John Carroll run with a goal at the 14:04 mark, but the Blue Streaks closed the half on another 8-0 run to take a 16-3 lead into the break.
JCU scored three of its six second half goals in the opening five minutes, and cruised to its fourth consecutive double-digit victory.
Vilsack had six goals, Curatolo added five and
Meghan Harte posted three to lead the scoring effort. Curatolo and
Moira Kelley each recorded four assists.
Mary Jo Murino made five saves as JCU improved to 6-2 ont he year in its final non-conference tune-up.
Defiance fell to 2-10 with the loss.
John Carroll outshot the Yellow Jackets, 35-9.
