Katie O'Donnell knifed a shot that struck the inside of the left post and trickled over the goal line for the game winning tally as John Carroll shocked visting Hanover, 1-0, in double overtime Saturday at Don Shula Stadium.
It was an impressive win for the home team, as Hanover came into play with a 4-2 record and coming off a tough overtime loss to nationally ranked Thomas More while John Carroll had picked up its first victory of the season Monday at Hiram.
Taylor Tercek performed admirably in goal, making five saves and helping JCU post its first shutout of the season.
Both teams took ten shots in the match, but it was John Carroll's tenth shot that mattered most.
Early in the second overtime period, O'Donnell gathered a ball on the right side and made several moves through the defense to get an open shot. She sent a low ball to the left post that got past Hanover keeper Karlee VanDerWeele, and the ball struck the post and rolled in for the game winner at the 102:05 mark.
O'Donnell's first collegiate goal helped John Carroll move to 2-4-1. Hanover fell to 4-3 on the year with the loss.
