John Carroll had ample opportunity to win its season opening match against Puget Sound Friday evening at the Elmhurst College Tournament.
Trouble was, the Blue Streaks did not cash in on enough of those opportunities to prevent a 2-1 loss to the Loggers of Puget Sound University in a neutral site match played in Elmhurst, Illinois.
Jake Lombardo had the lone JCU goal in the 84th minute, but the Blue Streaks' effort to net the equalizer failed to find its target in the closing minutes.
John Carroll had the better of the shots count (15-10) and enjoyed an overwhelming advantage in corner kicks (11-2).
This is the third season in the last four that John Carroll has dropped its opening match of the year. But slow starts have certainly not been an indicator of success for the Blue Streaks, as John Carroll has gone on to post a record of 42-15-4 between 2012-2014.
JCU will face tournament host Elmhurst on Sunday at 2:30 local time.
