The John Carroll men's soccer team travelled across Cleveland, looking to continue their unbeaten streak in conference play. While they allowed their first goal in four games, the offense was enough in a 2-1 defeat of the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets (4-10, 1-3 OAC) on Tuesday night.
With tonight's win, John Carroll (7-5-1) improves to 4-0 in the OAC and have now outscored conference foes 9-1.
The Blue Streaks came out firing and dominated the first half. JCU struck 10 shots in the half with five on goal and one finding the twine. It was not until the 42nd minute that the Yellow Jackets attempted their first shot, one that would fly through the goal posts.
The shot that found the net came off the foot of junior midfielder
Jake Lombardo in the sixth minute. After a penalty kick, Lombardo stole the outlet pass and pushed one by freshman goalie Patrick Mehal to go up 1-0.
On the defensive end, BW's defense was active as JCU took ten shots and did not convert on two corner kicks.
The tide turned in the 49th minute as sophomore forward Ryan Hassell headed a pass from freshman midfielder Timmy Jonas and knotted the score at one. That was all the offense BW would generate.
JCU had multiple chances fall short, but in the 65th minute,
Brian Lutz sent a cross through the middle which found
Jesse Marinaro. The junior headed the pass home and gave the Blue Streaks a 2-1 lead for good.
Overall, John Carroll outshot Baldwin-Wallace, 25-5. Eleven of the 25 shots were on goal and JCU had chances on six corner kicks. A major key for BW was the play of Mehal. The freshman had nine saves, which kept the game within reach in the second half.
Up next for John Carroll is an Oct. 15 trip to Ada, Ohio where they will take on #6 Ohio Northern at 7 p.m.
