The mantra for the John Carroll running backs has been to inflict damage on opposing defenses every week.
On Saturday, the group did just that.
The Blue Streaks backfield combined for 297 yards rushing and six touchdowns in a 56-0 victory over Capital on a brisk Saturday afternoon in University Heights.
Sam Kukura led the way with four rushing touchdowns, netting 74 total yards.
Ro Golphin was the leading rusher with 98 yards and a score, and
Arin Pruitt added a 62-yard scamper for a TD in the second half.
"Our goal is to impose our will every time," said Kukura after the win. "Coach [Tom] Szymanski is always preaching to pound forward, to fall forward each time, keep those legs moving."
"Right off the bat, we knew we wanted to pound the ball and we did that," added Pruitt. "It doesn't matter which one of us scores. It was all around a great day for us all."
John Carroll's defense was stout once again, holding the Crusaders to just 171 total yards, 45 on the ground, and just 2.8 yards per play. It was the fourth time this season that opposing rushers have failed to reach 100 total yards. It is the defense's first shutout of 2016, and the 10th in the
Tom Arth era.
Trevor Norquest led all Blue Streaks with eight tackles.
Adam Thompson recorded six tackles, one-half sack and two quarterback hurries. The defense sacked Capital passers five times, and forced two fumbles.
The Blue Streaks punted on their first drive, but unleashed an eight play, 80 yard drive on the next possession that ended with a one-yard Kukura touchdown. Capital was held to three drives in the first quarter, all of which went three-and-out.
Kukura notched his second score just four seconds into the second quarter from one-yard out. On the ensuing kickoff,
Anthony Leonetti knocked the ball away from Nick Waters and
Joshua Custer recovered it to the Capital 3-yard line.
The running back made it a hat trick on the next play with a three-yard TD.
Anthony Moeglin tossed a 14-yard touchdown to
Eddie Williamson with 11:38 left in the half. Capital recorded a first down on their next drive, but were stopped by a Michael Hollins interception at the JCU 38-yard line.
Moeglin would finish the day with two touchdown passes and an interception, reaching 210 passing yards. Williamson had six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. He broke his career-high for receiving yards for the second time against Capital, following 62 yards last year.
The exclamation points on the quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass to
Danny Disbrow with 7:39 left, and a fourth Kukura run with 0:34 left. JCU scored 35 points in the second quarter; it was the first time that the program achieved the feat since the first quarter of the 71-7 win in 2014 against the Crusaders.
In the first half, Capital was held to two first downs and 49 total yards. Golphin got on the scoreboard on JCU's first second half drive, making the score 49-0 with 12:39 in the third.
Arin Pruitt electrified the crowd at Shula Stadium by running free for a 62-yard score in the waning minutes of the third.
Up next for the Blue Streaks is a contest in New Concord, Ohio against Muskingum next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
