Two goals by the visitors early in the second half made the difference as John Carroll women's soccer dropped a 4-1 decision to Mount Union on Wednesday in rain-soaked University Heights.
John Carroll falls to 6-6-6 on the year, and 3-3-2 in conference play. Mount Union improves to 9-6-2 and 5-1-2 in the OAC.
Even with the loss, John Carroll qualified for the Ohio Athletic Conference postseason tournament for the ninth consecutive time. The berth comes courtesy of a Marietta College loss to Otterbein University that mathematically eliminated the seventh place Pioneers. Only the top six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the OAC playoffs.
Bailey Fischer started the scoring in the 18th minute as she buried a shot into the upper right corner of the net from 20 yards out. The play was set up by a pair of pinpoint passes by Lexi Keller and Jaclyn Audino.
John Carroll's joy was short lived. Forty-eight seconds later, Nicole Lanese took her own rebound and scored to level the game at one.
The Purple Raiders outshot the Blue Streaks, 7-6, in the first half. Both keepers turned away three shots in the first 45 minutes. It was a clean segment of play, with just one foul between the two teams.
Mount Union struck early in the second half, as Carolyn Balzano took a tough angle on the right side of the box in the 48th minute and got the shot past Guarnera. Three minutes later, Amy Bobonik took a pass from Maggie O'Donnell across the box and took advantage of a miscommunication in the box to beat Guarnera to the left for Mount Union's third goal.
The final goal came when Lanese shot past a wide gap in a pulled up defense to scor her second tally in the 82nd minute.
John Carroll is back in action in for the final time this regular season when Muskingum University makes the trip to University Heights. Kick off is slated for Saturday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 pm following senior day ceremonies. Â
