Men's Basketball Drops Final Home Non-Conference Game

In the final non-conference game at home this season, John Carroll men's basketball fell behind early and did not recover.

The Blue Streaks fell to Hope College, 85-72, on Tuesday evening in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The 15th-ranked Flying Dutchmen opened the game by scoring the first five points of the game. The first Blue Streaks points came two minutes into the game as Matt Csuhran hit back-to-back threes.

Head Coach Mike Moran re-entered the starters to try and keep the momentum rolling. In their first possession back in, David Linane found Simon Kucharewicz in the paint to take their first lead of the game, 10-9. However, that lead would be their only lead in the game.

Hope went on a 15-2 run to recapture the lead 23-12 halfway through the first half. Moran subbed a new five almost every two minutes to keep fresh legs in the game, but the Flying Dutchmen kept up. They managed to keep the Blue Streaks at least seven points behind in the remaining minutes of the half.

At one point, the Flying Dutchmen led by 19 points. JCU went on an 8-0 run in the final two minutes of the half to cut the score to 48-37 heading into halftime. Their run was highlighted by a three pointer from Antonio Vuyancih and John Cirillo, and two layups by Brian Papich.

John Carroll shot only 37.8 percent from the field in the first half, while Hope shot 58.1 percent. Csuhran contributed 10 points and four rebounds, and Harrison Blackledge led the Flying Dutchmen with 13 points.

The tables seemed to turn in the second half as the Blue and Gold scored the first five points and cut the lead to eight. Hope capitalized a couple of JCU turnovers to regain a double-digit lead.

With 12:32 on the clock, Ryan Berger boosted morale with a huge three pointer from the corner to cut Hope's lead back to ten, 61-51. After a Hope foul on the inbound, two easy free throws from Papich narrowed the gap even more.

Following a Kucharewicz dunk, the Flying Dutchmen went on a 11-5 run to make the score 77-60 with just one-fourth of the second half left to play.

Hope grabbed three consecutive offensive rebounds within just three minutes left to play, but they were unable to capitalize on any. Throughout the physical battle, each team committed 20 personal fouls and each had 23 attempts on the foul line.

David Linane was the leading scorer for the Blue Streaks as he contributed 11 points in the second half of play and 14 total points. Csuhran finished with 13 points. Doug Caputo led JCU in rebounds with eight.

For the Flying Dutchmen, Blackledge led all scorers with 32 points and nine rebounds.

JCU falls to 1-3 on the season and Hope moves to 4-1. This marks the fifth matchup between John Carroll and Hope since 1983. Hope remains undefeated in the series.

The Blue Streaks will travel to New Concord, Ohio on Dec. 3 to take on the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
