A last-second shot was unfriendly to John Carroll men's basketball once more on Saturday afternoon.
In a furious final stretch punctuated by multiple lead changes, it was Ohio Northern that would walk away with a win, knocking off the Blue Streaks by a final score of 93-91 in Ada, Ohio.
Matthew Csuhran was the leader for JCU, scoring 24 points off the bench on a 5-of-9 clip from beyond-the-arc.
Simon Kucharewicz was a perfect 10-of-10 from the floor, notching 22 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
David Linane, Jr. added 15 and nine assists.
The Blue Streaks outshot the Polar Bears, 50.0% to 46.3%. Konnor Baker had 20 points for ONU. Ryan Bruns had 10, including the game-winner. ONU held a slight rebounding advantage, 38-37.
John Carroll opened the proceedings with a 7-0 lead, and extended a sizable advantage throughout the first half. Kucharewicz threw down a dunk with 13:16 on the clock, giving JCU the 29-15 advantage. Less than a minute later, John Carroll took a 17-point lead off a three-pointer by Linane.
Ohio Northern roared back to tie the contest at 42 after a Burger three-pointer with under four minutes to go. A layup by Kucharewicz and three-pointer by Csuhran with 55 seconds left extended the lead back to seven for JCU. The Blue Streaks took a 51-44 advantage into the half.
Csuhran was lethal in the first 20 minutes, notching 17 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range. He added the other five on free throws. Linane had 11 points at the break.
After intermission, ONU kept the game close, never allowing the Blue Streaks lead to cross the double-digit mark.
With 9:06 to play, John Carroll led 73-64 off a Csuhran layup. The lead was whittled down until layups by Sebila and Bruns tied the game once more at 77 with 6:49 to go. Out of a timeout, the Polar Bears took their first lead on an Aron Thress layup.
Free throws by Konner Baker with 2:43 to play brought the ONU lead to five, but JCU was not finished. A three-pointer by Csuhran and layup by Linane forced a stalemate heading into the final two minutes.
With 1:20 on the clock, Kucharewicz slammed home a dunk, and JCU retook an 89-87 lead. Burger promptly drained a three-pointer a minute later, and ONU flipped the momentum once more.
After a missed layup, Kucharewicz fouled Baker. He split the free throws, giving Linane the chance to find Csuhran for a tying layup with seven seconds to play. Bruns scored the winning layup, sending the Blue Streaks into the holiday break with a loss.
Up next for John Carroll is a late-December trip to Tennessee for the Music City Classic.
