Linane's Layup Leads JCU To Victory In Tennessee

It took late game heroics to secure a Music City Classic sweep and to bring John Carroll men's basketball back to .500.

David Linane, Jr.'s late defense and layup with four seconds remaining in regulation sealed the deal as the Blue Streaks (5-5) took a 72-70 win over Marymount University on Friday in Nashville, Tenn.

Linane led all scorers with 20 points, 13 of which came in the second half. He was followed by Simon Kucharewicz (14), who fell one rebound shy of a double-double in points and rebounds.

Joining the pair of seniors by scoring in the double digits were juniors John Cirillo and Antonio Vuyancih, each of whom scored 10 points off of the bench.

Michael Anderson led Marymount with 18 points, shooting 4-of-7 from beyond-the-arc. Junior Dimitri Rucker aided to the Saints' cause by securing a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds off of seven made shots from the floor.

The first ten minutes of the contest showed a back-and-forth affair, with Marymount's three-point sharpshooting being the deciding factor. The Saints were shooting 85.7 percent from three-point territory after Brandon Rogers put Marymount ahead by 10 at the 11:44 mark.

The Blue Streaks then caught their momentum after going on a 12-2 run, forcing Marymount into a timeout with 3:38 remaining in the first half. Junior John Cirillo aided that run by contributing seven points in a span of 2:04.

After an exchange of baskets, JCU took a slight edge, 39-37, into the halftime break.

Marymount came out of the intermission by going on a 7-3 run within the first four minutes, followed by a 13-4 run that was capped at the 12:48 mark of the second half.

A Noah Bidar layup and pair of Tim Ludlow free throws gave the Blue Streaks their first lead of the home half with slightly over seven minutes to play. The cat-and-mouse game continued as the two teams battled and exchanged leads going  into the final three minutes of play.

Linane and junior Brian Papich put JCU ahead by scoring a quick five points to give the Blue & Gold just their second lead of the second half with 2:27 to play in regulation.

Linane's sharpshooting continued as he scored his fourth three-pointer of the day with 1:50 remaining to put the Blue Streaks ahead going into the final possessions.

Ibrahim Kamara of Marymount answered with a three-pointer of his own 17 seconds later, but then the JCU defense closed the door off of Linane's steal and layup with four ticks remaining on the game clock.

Linane finished the game with four three-pointers, two of which came within the final three minutes of play, along with three assists.

The Blue Streaks as a team forced Marymount into 21 turnovers, which JCU then turned into 23 points.

Up next, the Blue Streaks will return home to the DeCarlo Center to take on the Heidelberg Student Princes. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 4.
