Baseball Forces Extra Innings, Loses to RHIT in Ten

Fans in Auburndale, Fla. were treated to free baseball on Tuesday morning, as John Carroll and Rose-Hulman battled for ten innings.

It was an RBI double in the top of the tenth inning that set up a 4-2 victory for Rose-Hulman.

Zach Trusk's RBI double to left field was the difference, as go-ahead run Drew Schnitz scampered home from first base.

John Carroll falls to 2-2 on the season. Rose Hulman goes to 3-1.

Mark Materise (0-1) pitched the tenth and took the loss. Jonathan Banks (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Cody Sunderhaus notched his first save.

RHIT took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning off a David Burnside single. A throwing error allowed Trusk to run to third and Schnitz to score from second.

The second run came on a Patrick Klima RBI single that scored Trusk.

John Carroll rallied in the sixth and seventh innings. Jacob Schriner lined out to right field in the sixth, scoring Dominic Mittiga on the sacrifice.

In the next inning, Mittiga returned the favor. His single scored David Crowley, tying the game at 2.

Starter Drew Vargo exited in the sixth, giving up two runs on ficve hits and striking out four. Steven Virost threw 3.2 innings of relief, allowing no hits.

In the tenth, Schnitz reached on a throwing error. Trusk promptly drove him in. After a fielding error, RHIT had runners at second and third. Hazen Hamather added another run on a sacrifice fly to center, and Joe Shaffer struck out Klima to end the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, Sunderhaus came on in relief for RHIT, throwing a 1-2-3 save.

JCU was 4-14 with runners on base on the day. Blue and Gold pitchers held RHIT to a 2-12 clip with runners in scoring position. John Carroll had five errors in the game.

After a day off, JCU returns to action on Thursday with a doubleheader against Rhode Island.
