It was a good day for the John Carroll offense.
The omnipresent John Carroll-Saint Vincent multi-sport rivalry was renewed once again on Wednesday afternoon for men's lacrosse at Don Shula Stadium, and the offensive attack clicked all day as part of a 16-7 victory for the Blue Streaks.
Adding to the luster of the effort was a historic goal for junior
Declan O'Grady, as he surpassed 100 goals for his career.
Â
Junior attacker
Michael Hubert added on to O'Grady's career day, by tallying a career-high four goals in the game. Hubert finished with a game-high and career-high ten total points.
Â
The Blue Streaks struck early and often, rattling off five straight goals in the opening period. Hubert (2) and fellow junior
Dakota Thomas, along with sophomores Colin Rice and
RP Whitty, were contributing goal scorers in the 5-0 run to start off the game.
Â
After a well-placed time out by the Bercat coaching staff, a Saint Vincent comeback commenced, as three goals were scored within five minutes of action by three different Bearcats. "Middies" Alex Mueser and Brandon Masten, as well as attacker Anthony Hogeback, found the back of the net to cut into the Blue Streak lead.
After O'Grady connected on two separate occasions, the first of which was his historic century standard, the halftime score stood at 7-4 in favor of the Blue Streaks.
Â
The beginning of the second saga saw each team exchange a goal before Hubert connected at the 6:21 mark of the third period. Hubert gained a "hat trick" with this second half goal, the first of his Blue Streak career.
Â
The lead was extended to an 11-5 JCU advantageat the end of the third period, following a goal by freshman attacker
Collin Riley and another tally by Hubert.
Â
John Carroll finished off the match with a scoring onslaught, tallying five more goals in the final quarter; two from sophomore
Connor Pike, and one each from O'Grady, Riley and Whitty, while Saint Vincent recorded two more goals to finish off the contest.
Â
With the fourth quarter goal, O'Grady joined Hubert as both achieved "hat tricks" in this afternoon's game. The 16-goal game was a season-high mark for goals scored in a game by JCU this season.
This is the third time in two weeks that the two schools have played each other, all in three different sports (men's basketball, women's lacrosse and men's lacrosse). With the victory, the Blue Streaks advance to 3-2 on the season, while the St. Vincent Bearcats drop to 1-3. It was also John Carroll's ninth consecutive home victory dating back to last season, the Blue Streaks last loss at Shula Stadium on March 13, 2015 (11-8 to Aurora)Up next, the Blue Streaks will remain in University Heights as they will battle Elmhurst College on Saturday. The game is set for a 12 noon face-off at Don Shula Stadium.
