Softball Drives in 11 in First Game of Split With Hiram

After a lengthy post-Florida break, the John Carroll bats took no time to warm up, splitting a road doubleheader with Hiram on Wednesday night.

The 11 runs in the first game followed up a 13-run performance in the final game in Clermont on Mar. 4. It was the first time JCU has scored 10 or more runs in consecutive games since Mar. 9 and Mar. 23, 2013.

GAME ONE

A three-run first inning stage the stage for an offensive display in game one, as John Carroll rolled to an 11-1 victory at Herndon Field. The five-inning contest concluded after JCU scored seven runs in the final two innings.

Hannah Mizener capped off the win with a two-run blast to right center. Her home run made it 11-0. AnnMarie Kirchner (2-2) pitched four innings, allowing just three baserunners. Kayla Navratil threw the final inning, giving up one run.

In the first, Carly Simecek singled up the middle, scoring Taylor Tercek. Angie Zappitelli made it a 3-0 game on a two-run single to center field. Mizener reached on an error in the second, with Quinn Sobieszczanski scoring on the play. In the next inning, Mizener added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0. Singles by Simecek and Alyssa Coleman drove the lead to seven.

After Kirchner helped her own cause with a two-run single to center in the fifth, Mizener's blast was the exclamation point on a strong first effort.

An unearned Hiram run off an error in the fifth put the Terriers on the board, but the JCU lead was too much to overcome.

GAME TWO

Hiram got on the board early in game two, and never looked back, topping JCU, 2-0, in the second game.

Makenzie Dombrowski (3-5) was the winning pitcher. Jessica Cook (2-3) gave up two runs in four innings.

Hiram scored in the first on a fielder's choice. Cook retired four in a row and stranded a runner on a double play before allowing a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

JCU threatened in the fourth, as the Blue Streaks had runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth. Dombrowski struck out two batters and forced a pop-up to escape.

Up next for John Carroll is a Friday afternoon doubleheader with Capital University in Bexley, Ohio.
