Box Score 2 After a dominating 11-4 victory in game one, JCU fell short in a furious comeback, losing game two to Otterbein in Westerville by a score of 14-10.
This was the second 20-plus run doubleheader of the week; the Blue Streaks scored 23 against Wilmington on the road on Tuesday.
David Crowley went 5-for-10 on the day with seven RBI and four runs. The senior has crushed the baseball this week, hitting .464 with 2 home runs and 14 runs batted in.
GAME ONE
Four-run innings in the second and eighth set the stage for a big victory in game one.
Aaron Lapaglia improves to 4-2 on the year after striking out seven Cardinals and allowing three runs in eight innings.
Rob Cifelli,
David Crowley and
Mike Raschilla each had three hits, and Crowley drove in four runs. Six Blue Streaks had an RBI in the game.
Tyler Gentile started off the scoring in the first with an RBI single. Cifelli and Crowley brought three home in the second on a single and double, respectively.
The game broke open in the third when
Patrick Scholla doubled to right center and scored
Patrick Keohane.
In the eighth, a two-run Crowley single,
Monroe Donnelly sacrifice fly and Raschilla single made it a 10-2 game.
Five extra base hits in the game and four Cardinals errors moved runners along all afternoon.
Mark Materise came on in the ninth and shut the door after allowing one run.
GAME TWO
Otterbein jumped out to a 6-0 lead early, and looked to be in control of the game. A late JCU rally closed the gap, but the Cardinals finished off a 14-10 victory.
In the first three innings, the Cardinals built a major lead. Donnelly cracked open things for JCU with a sacrifice fly to center field. Scholla and Raschilla cut the lead to 6-3 in the next inning.
In the eighth, with an 8-4 lead, Otterbein seemingly ended the chances of the Blue Streaks. Two fielder's choices and two doubles added six runs to the Cardinals total.
In the next half-frame, JCU got to work. Cifelli's two-run single up the middle was the first blow; Raschilla got back another run on a single, and Crowley blasted a home run to right field for three more.
The Cardinals finished the game, and took the 14-10 decision.
Steven Virost is now 0-1 on the season, and Ben Hamilton imrpoves to 2-1.
