After a tough loss in extra innings to Muskingum in game one, the Blue Streaks took revenge, taking the second half of the twin bill.
Muskingum (16-16, 6-8) won game one, 6-5, in 11 innings. John Carroll (16-16, 9-5 OAC) took game two, 8-2, on "Strike Out ALS" Day at Schweickert Field on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams participated in the movement spearheaded by the Pete Frates #3 Fund, the group behind the viral Ice Bucket Challenge. The squads wore white wristbands with the ALS ribbon and Frates' number and initials.
GAME ONE
John Carroll fought back from a 5-1 deficit to force extra innings, but dropped the game, 6-5.
David Crowley was the leading hitter, going 3-for-5 with a RBI.
Patrick Scholla doubled twice, driving in two runs.
Mark Materise suffered his second loss of the year, after Patrick McGinty lofted a sacrifice fly to deep right field in the top of the eleventh.
The scoring was started in the first, as Austin DeVore singled for two runs to left center. Crolwey answered back in the bottom of the frame with a single to right field that scored
Rob Cifelli.
Muskingum scored three runs on a Marc Ibarra sacrifice fly, and two errors.
The Blue Streaks roared back with a Scholla two-run double, and a run driven in on a double play in the fourth.
The big play came in the seventh, when Mike Rachilla drove home Crowley on a bases-loaded single.
Aaron Lapaglia was the starter, throwing nine innings. He allowed two earned runs on ten hits, with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Blue Streaks had three multi-run innings on the way to an 8-2 victory in game two.
Brandon Maddern locked down the Fighting Muskies lineup, allowing five baserunners in 6 1/3 innings of work. He punched out eight batters, and only gave up two runs.
After three scoreless innings,
Tyler Gentile got things rolling with a RBI single. Scholla delivered again, drawing a bases-loaded walk. In the fifth, Gentile doubled home a run down the left field line. A wild pitch scored Crowley and Raschilla brought home a third run on a single.
The 5-0 lead would be trimmed on a few occasions, but
Jacob Schriner put an exclamation point on the day with a single that scored Raschilla and Gentile in the seventh.
Cifelli (2-3),
Patrick Keohane (3-4) and Gentile (2-4) each had multi-hit games.
Up next for JCU is a single game on Tuesday at Progressive Field against Case Western Reserve.
