On July 30, 2012, John Carroll University announced the formation of a men's lacrosse program.
1,371 days later, that program has clinched the first conference co-championship in school history.
John Carroll defeated the Ohio Northern Polar Bears, 8-6, to secure a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season crown. The Blue Streaks hold the joint honor with Baldwin Wallace, who they defeated on Wednesday evening.
Both squads finish the regular season at 5-1 in conference play, with JCU holding home-field advantage for the coming tournament.
Connor Pike led the way with four goals, with
Michael Hubert contributing two scores and three assists.
Kyle Lake saved six shots.
Ohio Northern took their only lead of the day on a Mitch Groves goal two minutes into play. JCU ripped off goals from Pike and Hubert at 6:14 and 4:08 to take the lead, but not before a man-up goal from Max Weese with 15 seconds left in the first quarter.
The see-saw started to tip JCU's way late in the first half.
Collin Rice scored off a pass from Colin Riley with 6:00 left in the half. Then, Pike buried a shot with 3:38 to play, which was quickly answered by Weese roughly 1:40 later.
Logan Calhoun stuffed that momentum when he took a Hubert pass and scored with 47 seconds to play.
Hubert found Pike again for the third quarter's lone goal in the final minute. The lead was pushed to four when Pike took an unassisted shot to make it 8-4 with 7:34 to play. Goals from Anthony Pavone and Weese were not enough, as JCU held on to win the game.
Ohio Northern doubled up JCU on penalties, 4:30 to 2:00. JCU outshot ONU, 39-27. The teams split the game's 18 faceoffs, and JCU also led in ground balls, 34-29.
John Carroll moves on to the OAC Tournament as the number one seed; they will play Wednesday evening at Shula Stadium, with time and opponent yet to be determined.
