Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | John Alfes, Senior Writer

See-Saw Affair Yields JCU Victory at Home

Protecting your home turf is an essential part of a winning soccer program.

The John Carroll University women's soccer team showed resilience in a come-from-behind victory over the visiting Hiram College Terriers by a score of 3-2 at Don Shula Stadium. Despite a 2-3-1 overall record, JCU has won both of its games at home this season (September 7th vs Wooster).

A historical winning trend would repeat itself after a decisive second half goal off the foot of senior Dre Regrut in the 82nd minute, her second of the game (both off free kicks). The Blue Streaks have now won 17 of their 19 meetings against the Terriers dating back to September 25, 1991 (W, 5-0).

The see-saw affair had its first goal at the 30-minute mark, a Katie O'Donnell shot that deflected off a Hiram defender and found its way to the back of the net. 15 minutes later, Hiram evened the score courtesy of senior Emily Syrjala's first goal of 2016. The Terriers showcased an aggressively-paced offense opposite a stingy JCU defense. At the intermission, the score was deadlocked at one.

Hiram senior Ashley Myer wasted no time to begin the second half with her first goal of the campaign 36 seconds in. The Blue and Gold responded under the composure and confidence of Regrut. The Dublin, OH native had a free kick opportunity and delivered with ease for her fifth career goal. Two lead changes and four tallies of offense added up to a 2-2 score heading into the closing stretch of the second half.

Another free kick, another goal, a second home victory.

That was the story of the game for John Carroll and Regrut. The four-year veteran defender sunk a 25-yard touch shot over the outstretched hands of freshman goalkeeper Ally Green. The top left portion of the net proved to be the landing spot of the score, and the difference in the game.

Three days separate JCU from its next non-conference battle against Kenyon College in University Heights, OH.  The Sunday affair is slated to kickoff at 2 PM between two programs that have each won three games against each other in the historical matchup.
