The weekend featured two women's soccer double overtime contests in University Heights. On Sunday, the John Carroll University women's soccer team (3-3-4) went the distance for a third consecutive contest, coming away with a 1-1 tie against cross town rival Case Western Reserve (4-2-2).
The Blue Streaks controlled the ball early in the game and had two shots in the first four minutes but neither of which challenged Spartan goalie Sarah Newcomb. At 16:41 of the first half, sophomore standout
Bailey Fischer broke the scoring drought when she let a shot rip from the right hash across her body and beat Newcomb off the inside left post for her second goal of the season.
Despite the Blue Streaks dominating possession for the majority of the half, the Spartans were more successful putting shots on net and tied the game on a Jennifer Zajic corner kick with 43 seconds remaining in the half. Case Western had seven shots and four on net to JCU's five shots with two on net.
The second half was a lot more evenly matched as both teams traded chances for the entire 45 minutes. The Spartans came out flying in the first overtime period and had two great chances to finish off the game in the first three minutes. But the Blue Streak defense held strong to keep their chances at victory alive. Amy Lindberg had the best chance for Case Western and had a shot right on the doorstep, but senior defender
Maria Ploplis made a tremendous play and deflected the shot out of harm's way and out of bounds.
The following possession for the Spartans, Lindberg had another great opportunity to finish off the game but Blue Streak goaltender
Rhianna Guarnera fought it off to keep the game alive. The best chance for the Blue Streaks was with under a minute to go in the first overtime period when Fischer crossed it from the right side into the box, but Case goaltender Newcomb caught it out of the air to nullify any chance of a John Carroll goal. The first half of overtime ended with the score still knotted up at 1-1.
The Spartans were the aggressors to start the second overtime period, but Guarnera and the rest of the John Carroll defense kept Case Western out of the net and held on to tie the Spartans by a final score of 1-1.
The Blue Streaks will open up OAC play on October 1st when they host the Wilmington Quakers at 4:00 p.m.
