The John Carroll football team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans, 33-14, in the first ever meeting of the programs.
The season-opening loss is the first of its kind in the
Tom Arth era for John Carroll. It was a battle of the defenses for the majority of the first half but in the end, the Titans made the plays that they needed to come away with the win.
Sophomore quarterback
Anthony Moeglin showed a promise in his Blue Streak debut, ending the day with 199 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on 27-for-47 passing. Receiver
Nico James led the Blue Streak receivers with six catches for 52 yards and a score.
Sam Kukura rushed for 83 yards on 19 carries in his JCU debut.
On the opening drive of the game, Moeglin took the JCU offense down to the 20 yard line, but the Blue Streaks came away with nothing after a
Matt Danko 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked. The UW-Oshkosh defense shut down the Blue Streak offense from there on, as they failed to score for the remainder of the half.
The Titans made the most of their opportunities and took advantage of great field position as well, capitalizing on two field goal attempts from Eli Wettstein and a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Brett Kasper (22-31, 270 yards, two touchdowns). They headed to the locker room at the half with a 13-0 lead. Following a JCU punt to the UWO 10-yard line, the Titans opened up the second half with a 12 play, 90-yard touchdown drive that increased their lead to 20-0.
On the Blue Streaks next possession,
Anthony Moeglin's pass slipped through the grasp of senior wide receiver
Marshall Howell and straight into the hands of UWO's Rajon Hall which set up a two play, 53 yard touchdown drive to put the Streaks in a 27-0 hole with 6:45 to play in the 3rd quarter.
The JCU offense struggled to find traction early in the game and the UWO defense limited their chances to get on the board. Late in the third, Moeglin led the Blue Streaks on a 12 play, 70 yard drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior running back
Arin Pruitt.
"I think there was a lot of really good things, but a lot of things that we have to correct as well," said head coach
Tom Arth. "It's a very talented group that is very capable of scoring a lot of points," Arth continued. "In the end it comes down to execution and we didn't execute at a high enough level today."
The Blue Streaks head into the bye week with an 0-1 record, but will be back in action on Sept. 17th, when they open up OAC play at home against crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace at 7:00 p.m.
