John Carroll volleyball made the shortest road trip of the season on Tuesday night. In a long fight, John Carroll fell in five sets to the home Falcons in a sweltering South Euclid gymnasium.
JCU was led by
Alexa Webber's 15 kills, while
Kit O'Shaughnessy added 38 of the team's 48 assists and 14 digs.
Katie Cosker led the team in digs with 21, and
Nicole Pilewski notched a dozen kills. Maddie McDowell added 10 kills and a block on the night. Melissa Maczuzak and Natalie Spadaro each had 18 kills for the Falcons.
Notre Dame took the first set, 28-26, following a back-and-forth affair. JCU briefly took the lead, but could not stop the Falcons.
The Blue Streaks roared out to a 5-1 lead before NDC countered, tying the set at 7. The Falcons hung close, but JCU opened a 17-10 lead to force a timeout. After the break, NDC threatened again, closing the gap to 21-17 at the next timeout. The Falcons brought the score to one two different times before O'Shaughnessy ended the set with a kill.
The beginning of the third set was more the same, with JCU taking a 4-1 advantage. Once again, the home faithful provided an advantage as NDC battled back to 14-11. JCU rode kills from Pilewski, Switalski and Webber to a 23-19 lead. Pilewski's kill made 24, and the final point on a 25-20 win came on a block by Switalski and Webber.
Webber was a thorn in the side of the Falcons through three sets, recording 12 kills. O'Shaughnessy averaged 9.3 assists per set in the first three.
It was NDC's turn to take an early lead in the fourth, and JCU quickly obliged with their own rally. The Blue Streaks tied it at 9 on an error, but NDC went on a 8-1 run to increase the lead to 20-13. The Falcons rode the momentum to a 25-17 win.
Long points were the hallmark of the tiebreaker. JCU leveled the set at 4 on a kill by
Sydney Slater. O'Shaughnessy fired home the fifth point, which was quickly matched by NDC. There were five ties leading up to an 8-6 NDC lead at the switch. A diving stop by Pilewski kept alive a play ended by Cosker, leveling things at 8. Timeout was called as NDC took a 12-10 lead on a Spadaro kill. The Falcons finished it off, taking the set and the match.
