Hot Hands Drive John Carroll Past Otterbein On Road

Four Blue Streaks were in double-figures as John Carroll men's basketball cruised to an 82-58 victory over host Otterbein University on Wednesday night.

David Linane, Jr. (16), John Cirillo (14), Simon Kucharewicz (13), and Doug Caputo (10) each played key roles in the victory for JCU, which moves to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Otterbein tumbles to 7-7, and 3-4 in OAC play. Austin Springer led the way with 15 points for the Cardinals.

Kucharewicz notched a double-double with his 11 rebounds, and added five assists. With the win, JCU ensures that it will stay in at least a tie for first place in the conference.

Otterbein held an 18-15 lead with 9:48 to play in the first following a Matt Hughes three-pointer. Back-to-back treys from Linane gave the Blue and Gold a 24-18 advantage, one they would not squander. It launched a 16-2 run for John Carroll, punctuated by a three-pointer from Ryan Berger.

A layup by Cirillo late in the half gave the Blue Streaks a 20-point lead, and Linane pushed that advantage to 46-25 at the break following another three-pointer.

JCU outshot Otterbein, 53.1% to 30.0% in the first 20 minutes. The Blue and Gold would go on to shoot 53.2% for the game.

The Cardinals cut the lead to as little as 10 with 13:34 to play, but John Carroll ripped off a 19-2 run over seven minutes that pushed the score to 70-45. Berger contributed eight points on the night, and Antonio Vuyancih provided five assists off the bench.

The JCU bench outscored Otterbein, 34-30. The Blue Streaks forced 19 turnovers, converting those errors into 25 points. John Carroll dominated in the paint, topping the Cardinals 44-14.

John Carroll returns home Saturday to do battle with Wilmington College at 2:00 p.m.
