On a night in which
David Linane, Jr. became the John Carroll all-time assist king, it was only fitting that the senior would also lead his team to victory.
Linane poured in 25 points and dished out three assists in an 82-78 win over Mount Union at the MAAC Center in Alliance, Ohio on Wednesday night.
The Blue Streaks get back on track with an OAC win and move to 11-6 and 8-3 in the OAC.
Simon Kucharewicz added 17 points, as the Blue Streaks and Purple Raiders both shot 50.0 percent from the floor. Diallo Niamke had 27 for UMU.
With 13:12 remaining in the first half, Linane got the ball on the right elbow and used a screen from Kucharewicz. The senior went left and dropped a bounce pass off to a rolling Kucharewicz who laid the ball in. With the assist, Linane became the all-time assist leader in John Carroll history with 455.
On this historic night, John Carroll would have to rely on consistent team scoring, incredible defense and a huge run at the beginning of the second half. On offense, four different Blue Streaks scored in double figures.
A back-and-forth first half lead to a halftime score of 41-39, John Carroll came out of the locker room on a mission. The Blue Streaks turned up the heat on defense causing eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the half and 24 turnovers for the game.
The JCU offense followed suit. Buckets by Linane,
John Cirillo,
Ryan Berger and a pair of free throws by Kucharewicz erased the halftime deficit and gave the Blue Streaks a 14-point lead with 8:53 left. That completed the John Carroll 27-12 run.
Mount Union would not go down quietly. Junior guard JJ Kukura would score eight of Mount Union's next 16 points. Niamke kept the Raiders in it all night. His career-high in points 26 came on a layup that would tie the game up at 77.
Linane would make the two biggest plays of the game. He drove lane, got contact in the air and was able to finish the layup with a foul. After knocking the free throw down, Linane took a charge on a cutting Niamke to seal the 82-78 John Carroll victory.
Up next, John Carroll looks to avenge an early season loss when Muskingum (11-7, 5-6 OAC) comes to University Heights on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
