The John Carroll Men's Soccer Team defeated the Purple Raiders of Mount Union on Wednesday night by a 3-0 score at Don Shula Stadium.
It was a victory that came with many layers.
The first layer was playoff seedings. With the victory, the Blue Streaks clinch a first round bye in the Ohio Athletic Conference postseason tournament next week and will be the number two seed behind regular season champion Otterbein. That means JCU will advance to the semifinal round on Thursday, November 2, and will play at home.
The second layer was
Liam McIntosh moving into second place on the school's all-time victory liost. He now has 39 career victories in less than three full seasons.
The third layer was reaching double digit shutouts. Tonight's win marks the 10th shutout for the Blue Streaks on the season. This is the most shutouts John Carroll has recorded since the 2003 campaign.
John Carroll came out on the offensive, attempting seven shots in the opening half compared to the zero by Mount Union.
It took until the sixth shot for JCU to loosen the scoreless tie. Dalton Browksy broke through, netting the first goal of the game in the 33rd minute. Junior
Brian Lutz and senior
Jesse Marinaro were credited with the assists.
The Blue Streaks stayed aggressive after taking a 1-0 lead into the break. In the 56th minute, Browksy scored his second goal of the game for the Blue and Gold. This time the assist was credited to freshman
Jared Ianiro. Browksy now has six goals on the season.
The Blue Streak offense remained dominant through the second half as Marinaro netted his first goal of the night for John Carroll in the 71 st minute. Senior
Jared Vidika and freshman
Stephen Schutt were credited with the assist to Marinaro.
The strong backline of Tristian Lyles,
Mitchell Kotheimer,
Eric Rozsits, and Vidika kept the Purple Raiders scoreless for the first time since a 0-0 tie against Heidelberg on October 7.
John Carroll, now 14-2-1 overall and 6-2 in the OAC, will remain home for senior night this Saturday, October 28th to take on Muskingum at Don Shula Stadium at 7 p.m.Â
