The 2017-18 John Carroll men's basketball team has excelled offensively in a way that this program has never seen before.
Â
After defeating host Kalamazoo College by a 103-65 score Sunday on the second day of the Kalamazoo College Thanksgiving Classic, the Blue Streaks have now reached the 100-point mark in each of their first four games. No other John Carroll squad has been able to score 100 points in four consecutive contests in the 98-year history of the program.
John Carroll has won its opening four games by margins of 35, 26, 21 and 38 points.
Â
Kalamazoo actually began the game on a 12-2 run over the opening four minutes before the Blue Streaks roared back. When
John Cirillo made a lay-up at the 13:01 mark, JCU had its first lead of the game at 17-6.
It was still a close game at the 5:36 mark of the first half when John Carroll held a slim 37-33 advantage following a Kalief Gaines three-pointer for the Hornets. From there, the Blue Streaks outscored Kalamazoo, 21-4, and headed into the locker room with the 58-37 lead. Nine different players would score four or more points, highlighting an even scoring attack from the visitors.
Â
The Blue Streaks would have a strong second half as well. John Carroll's defense would take the forefront, as Kalamazoo was held to a 27 shooting percentage for the half, including 15 percent from behind the arc. The Hornets were held to just 28 points in the second half. JCU maintained the evenly distributed offensive effort, with no Blue Streak scoring more than eight points in the half and the squad still managing 45 points in the final 20 minutes.
Â
Sophomore
Ryan Berger lead the way with 16 points, while seniors
Antonio Vuyancih and Matt Csuhran put up 14 points each. A total of 14 John Carroll players found their way into the scorebook.
The Blue Streaks shot a solid 46 percent from the field and totaled 22 assists. Sophomore
Jimmy Berger contributed seven of those 22 assists.
Â
With the victory, John Carroll improves to 4-0 on the season. Their next contest will be on December 2, as the Blue Streaks host Muskingum in their conference opener. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
