On a December evening where there was no snow falling in University Heights, threes were.
The Blue Streaks knocked down 16 threes in a 108-86 win against the La Roche Redhawks Tuesday night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center. The win marked the seventh time this season that John Carroll had scored at least 100 points, setting a program record just nine games into the schedule.
John Carroll started out hot, jumping to a quick 11-2 lead thanks to three pointers by
Ryan Berger and Matt Csuhran.
With 12:03 to go in the first half, Evan Brown drilled a three ball for La Roche to cut the Blue Streak lead to seven, but
Greg Parella quickly took the inbound pass the other way for an "and-one" to give the Blue Streaks the momentum back.
John Carroll was forced to battle through foul trouble after picking up six fouls in the first nine minutes of play, leaving La Roche in the bonus for the remainder of the first half.
Yet the Blue Streaks fought through it to put 63 points on the scoreboard in the first half. Freshman
Jackson Sartain drilled three pointers on back-to-back possessions to give the Blue Streaks a 51-34 lead with 3:13 remaining. That ignited a late push that enabled the Blue Streaks to lead by as many as 23 points before taking a 63-42 lead into the locker room.
The Blue Streaks were able to knock down 10 of 20 three pointers in the first half, while shooting 51.2% from the floor. John Carroll had six players with six or more points at the intermission, including
John Cirillo who lead all scorers with 14 and Matt Csuhran who tacked on 12.
In the second half, La Roche jumped out on a quick 14-5 run, trimming the Blue Streaks sizeable advantage down to 69-54, but a huge three and a layup from Cirillo halted the Red Hawks momentum.
An
Emil Hess lay-up at the 10:40 mark gave John Carroll its largest lead of the night at 88-62. The Redhawks never got closer than 18 the remainder of the contest.
Csuhran lead the way for John Carroll (8-1) with 20 points, and Cirillo tacked on 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sartain added 17 points and Parella and Antonio Vuyancih finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. JCU finished the evening shooting 44.8% from the floor.
Leading the way for La Roche (5-5) was Trell Thomas with 14, and Ray Quan Phifer and Arnes Bajgora with 13.
The Blue Streaks are now on a three game win streak heading into the holiday season. Next up for the Blue Streaks will be a trip to Holland, Michigan, for the Hope College Holiday Tournament. They will face Olivet College on Friday December 29th and Hope on Saturday December 30th to round out 2017.
