Men's Basketball Knocks Off OAC Favorites With Exceptional Second Half

Outscoring their hosts 52-33 in the second half, John Carroll upset the 13th ranked Marietta College Pioneers on the road Saturday afternoon by a final score of 93-82.

Six Blue Streaks found their way into double digits in the scoring column, led by the Berger brothers. Jimmy had 19 points while Ryan added 12. John Cirillo (15), Sean Flannery (12), Matthew Csuhran (11) and Antonio Vuyancih (10) were also big parts of the offensive effort.

The preseason pick to win the Ohio Athletic Conference, Marietta was clicking on all cylinders early in the contest. The Pioneers made 14 of their first 20 shots, and at one point held a 39-22 advantage over the Blue Streaks.

JCU was still trailing, 49-32, with 1:59 left to play in the opening half when it began to make a move to climb back in. A three-point basket by Flannery and a lay-up by Vuyancih at the buzzer capped a 9-0 run to close the half, putting the Blue Streaks within striking distance at 49-41 when intermission arrived.

Ryan Berger and Csuhran led the Blue Streaks with eight points a piece in the first half.

John Carroll continued their momentum in the second half and grabbed their first lead since it was up 7-6 early in the first half when senior John Cirillo buried a three pointer at the 11:19 mark, giving JCU a 66-64 advantage.

After going back and forth with neither team able to break the four point Blue Streak cushion, Flannery again stepped up and drilled a huge three point basket with just over three minutes remaining to give the Blue Streaks a 83-75 lead.

John Carroll only allowed eight points in the final five minutes of the game, and just 35 points over the final 25 minutes of the game, to secure the victory over the nationally ranked Pioneers.

Second chances were the difference for JCU securing 19 offensive rebounds resulting in 27 points. John Carroll also was able to put up 16 more shots from the floor than the Pioneers.

Marietta, which began the week ranked #13 by D3hoops.com, shot 28-54 (.519) for the game, including 11-26 (.423) from three-point range, and made 15-18 (.833) from the free throw line, but were coerced into 16 turnovers. John Carroll also won the rebounding battle, 39-30, with the Blue Streaks getting 19 caroms off the offensive glass.

John Carroll will host Ohio Northern (5-2, 3-0 OAC) this Saturday at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 2:00 p.m.
