John Carroll Falls In OAC Tournament On Last Second Shot

In the closing seconds of Tuesday's action, Antonio Vuyancih buried a shot in the paint to give John Carroll men's basketball the lead. Moments later, Marcus Dempsey sent Muskingum University to the OAC Tournament semifinal.

The three-pointer with 0.7 seconds left was the cap on a 69-68 loss for the Blue Streaks to the Fighting Muskies at Mike Moran Court at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Dempsey's shot effectively ends the season for John Carroll and the 25-year coaching tenure of Mike Moran in University Heights. The coaching legend exits with 14 OAC titles and 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.

John Carroll's Ryan Berger led all scorers tonight with 18 points. Simon Kucharewicz recorded 11 points and seven rebounds. Joshua Keyes recorded a double-double for the night (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Dempsey chipped in 14 points for the Muskies.

Muskingum started off the game with a 10-1 run, preventing John Carroll from scoring within the first four minutes of the game. Simon Kucharewicz ended the drought with a free throw. Slowly, the Blue Streaks gained momentum, and for the remaining thirteen minutes, both teams would fight back and forth to obtain the lead. The score at the half was 33-30 in favor of the Blue Streaks.

Muskingum built an eight-point lead in the second half, but the Blue Streaks fought back. After a Keyes free throw at 4:57, JCU went on a 15-5 run, including an acrobatic move and layup in the paint by David Linane, Jr. With 13 seconds to go, Vuyancih buried his shot and Muskingum and JCU traded timeouts.

With 3.6 to go, Dempsey dribbled and leaned into a three-pointer which found the bottom of the net. A desperation heave by Linane fell short.

John Carroll finishes up the season 17-8 overall and 14-6 in the OAC.  Muskingum improves to 14-12 overall and 8-11 in the OAC and advances to the OAC semifinal.
