Six Goal Flurry In Opening Period Propels JCU To Victory In Home Opener

A chilly afternoon could not cool off the red hot Blue Streaks in their home opener.

John Carroll University (2-1) defeated the College of Wooster (0-2) by a final score of 11-5 on Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.

The Blue Streaks were seeking their first win over the Fighting Scots in program history, and it was clear they were going to get it done after their blazing first quarter performance.

Skyler Blake started off the frenzy with an early man-up goal for the Blue and Gold.

Then, a bundle of Blue Streaks scored to give JCU a five-goal lead, 6-1, heading into the second quarter. Among the goal scorers were Michael Hubert, Ryan Bleggi, Collin Rice and Connor Pike, who tallied a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes.

Wooster's lone goal in the first quarter came from Sam Kuhn with 7:30 on the clock. During the second quarter, both teams were only able to score one goal each. Wooster's offensive threat Josh Herold fired in a shot, but Blake answered with his second goal of the day. John Carroll went into halftime with a 7-2 lead.

In the opening half, the Blue Streaks won 8-of-11 faceoffs and committed zero penalties, while the Fighting Scots had four players spend a combined three minutes in the box.

John Carroll outscored Wooster 2-1 in the third quarter. With 5:19 on the clock, Pike scored his third goal of the day on a man-up opportunity. Rice had the assist on that goal.

Shortly after, Wooster's Alexander Bloom found the back of the net to cut the deficit to five again, 8-3. However, with just seconds remaining in the quarter, Declan O'Grady ripped in a shot to extend the lead to six heading into the final 15 minutes of the game.

An early Wooster goal in the fourth quarter was quickly overlooked by back-to-back John Carroll goals by Hubert and MacGregor Roberts. A final goal by the Fighting Scots brought the score to 11-5. John Carroll goalie Kyle Lake finished the day with 12 saves. JCU won 14-of-20 faceoffs and held a 31-23 edge on ground balls throughout the game.

The Blue Streaks will welcome Aurora University to Don Shula Stadium on Friday, Mar. 10.
