Blue Streaks Take Weekend Series With Transylvania With Sunday Win

John Carroll took the third game in the weekend series with Transylvania on Sunday, topping the Pioneers, 6-3.

Jake Servidio took the mound for John Carroll, allowing just three runs in six innings and striking out five. The John Carroll bullpen allowed four baserunners and no runs in relief. Cameron Mayle (W, 1-1) pitched the seventh and eighth, and Mark Materise (S, 3) nailed down the ninth.

At the plate, Dominic Mittiga went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Monroe Donnelly tripled on a 1-for-4 day. Aaron Zawadski and Derek Penman each went 2-for-4.

John Carroll jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a Monroe Donnelly triple down the right field line scored John Bondi, and a Mittiga single scored Donnelly.

Transylvania answered in the bottom half, but Penman extended the lead to 3-1 after a single into right field. The Pioneers would level the score in the third inning off of an RBI single and passed ball on a walk.

After that two run inning, the Blue Streaks pitching staff went to work. Between the fourth and eighth innings, Transylvania hitters managed just two hits and stranded four runners. Cameron Mayle allowed no hits and two walks in two innings of relief.

In the top of the ninth, JCU caught the break it needed. Mittiga singled up the middle, followed by an error by the catcher to put Matthew Donnelly on base. A fielder's choice put Nathan Reich on first base and advanced Donnelly to second. James Molnar reached on an error at second base, and all three runners came home on Penman's single. The left fielder committed an error which cleared the bases.

Materise came on for the second straight day in the ninth. After forcing a groundout, he surrendered two consecutive singles. Following a strikeout, the runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Materise slammed the door with a groundout to second base.

Next up for JCU is a Thursday contest at Denison at 5:00 p.m.
