After allowing six goals in the first half, the John Carroll defense rose to the occasion and led a second half resurgence that produced an 11-8 victory over Ohio Northern Saturday at Don Shula Stadium.
The visiting Polar Bears netted two goals in the final 68 seconds of the contest, but for the first 28 minutes of the second half, scoring chances were turned away at every opportunity.
The Blue Streaks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter, with
Declan O'Grady,
Colin Corcoran, and
Keegan Flinter assailing the Polar Bears net in the opening nine minutes. The upstart Polar Bears, however, did not stay in hibernation. The next four tallies belonged to Ohio Northern, stunning the home crowd to take a 4-3 lead midway through the second period.
When
Skyler Blake, O'Grady and
Connor Pike responded with another three goal barrage, order seemed to have been restored. But two Ohio Northern goals separated by eight seconds in the penultimate minute of the opening half saw the two teams head to the locker room tied at 6-6.
Only one goal was scored the entire third quarter by either team, and that was a man up goal by O'Grady -- his third of the day -- to give JCU a 7-6 lead entering the final 15 minutes of play. Ohio Northern was held to one shot on goal in the third period.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Blue Streaks, who rattled off four goals in the opening ten minutes to pout the game out of reach. Pike, O'Grady,
RP Whitty and
Collin Rice all tallied goals to give JCU an 11-6 edge with 5:13 to play.
JCUÂ held slight advantages in ground balls (34-29) and faceoff wins (12-11) while owning a significant edge in shots on goal (17-10).
The Blue Streaks are now 8-4 overall and 6-0 in the OAC, remaining one game ahead of Baldwin Wallace for first place with two remaining contests next week. Ohio Northern drops to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.
