Blue Streaks Earn Impressive Victory Over Perennial Power Thomas More

John Carroll came up big when it had to, taking a first half lead and then regaining it in the second to post a 2-1 victory over Thomas More Sunday at Don Shula Stadium.

The victory was impressive against an opponent that does not lose often. In fact, during the 2015 and 2016 regular seasons, Thomas More College did not lose a single match.

Despite the credentials of the opposition, the Blue Streaks played a confident match this afternoon. Tucked in the back of the Blue Streaks' mind was the fact that Thomas More was 20-0-1 in the 2016 regular season, and that one tie was against John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks got on the board first when Bailey Fischer fed a perfect thru ball to Katie O'Donnell, who beat the keeper to the right side for her first goal of the season.

That 1-0 score held up for the remainder of the half.

It did not take the visitors long to answer in the second half. Just 121 seconds in, Olivia Nienaber finished off a nice cross from Hannah Dargo for her fourth goal of the year to knot the score at 1-1.

The winning tally was the result of an amazing turn of fortune for the Blue Streaks. In the 67th minute, a free kick richocheted away from a pulled up Thomas More defense, allowing Fischer to win the chase to the loose ball. With nearly half the field ahead of her, she raced forward and got a shot off from 12 feet out that keeper Kylie Anderson got a pice of bad had enough momentum to roll in the goal.

There were still 23 minutes to play, but John Carroll fended off the Saints well. Rhianna Guarnera would make just one more of her seven saves, and the Blue Streaks faced just one corner in preserving the one-goal victory.

In the shots count, Thomas more held a 14-12 edge.

The win was the first for John Carroll against Thomas More since 1998.
