Coming off only their second loss of the season, the John Carroll University men's basketball team looked to get back in the win column Wednesday night in Tiffin, Ohio -- a place where victories have always been well earned.
Such was the case once again, as the Blue Streaks built a big lead then held off a strong challenge from host Heidelberg for a 100-94 victory.
Heidelberg was fresh off a tournament title captured in Tampa, and the Student Princes came out of the gates quickly, building an early 24-13 lead.  John Carroll had not scored for four minutes and 13 seconds, and the shots were not falling from anywhere. Sophomore
Jimmy Berger helped turn the tide with a made three-point shot that would ignite the Blue Streak comeback. From there, JCU would go on an impressive 20-8 run and gain their first lead of the game. Senior Matt Csurhan made two free throws to put the Blue Streaks ahead. Csurhan would lead the Blue Streaks in scoring with 14 points, and JCU would head into halftime with the 48-44 lead.
32 of the Blue Streaks 48 points were scored in the final 8:34 of the half.
JCU came out strong to begin the second half, outscoring the Student Princes 24-8 through the first seven minutes to take a 72-52 lead and seemed on their way to a rousing win. Heidelberg would not bow out, however as a couple three-point makes from Chris Moxley and Kiere Bennie would help the home team go on its own run and trim the JCU lead down to three points at 76-73.
Senior
Antonio Vuyancih and sophomore
Sean Flannery pulled the Blue Streaks from the fire. Vuyancih contributed 12 of the Blue Streaks final 25 points while Flannery netted a three-point shot with 1:31 left in the game to put away.
Csurhan led the Blue Streaks in scoring and rebounds with 30 and eight, respectively. Vuyancih contributed 22 points himself and hit the 750 career point total during the contest. Sophomore
Jimmy Berger and Flannery combined for eight of JCU's 14 assists.
The Blue Streaks have scored in triple digits in eight of 12 games, and have not lost when scoring in double digits.
John Carroll's next contest will take place on Saturday, January 6th, as the Blue Streaks host Capital University. That game will take place at 1:00 p.m., which is a change from the original schedule.
