Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and at times today's football game between John Carroll and Capital was not pretty. But try to convince John Carroll head coach
Rick Finotti that shutting out an opponent is not aesthetically pleasing.
For the second time in as many home games this season, John Carroll held an opponent scoreless as the Blue Streaks posted a 44-0 win over Capital as part of Homecoming weekend in University Heights.
"Its great to see, but there is always room for improvement," said Finotti. "That's the competitors mentality, and that's the way the players take it. They won't rest. They'll enjoy it for 24 hours and they'll get back after it Monday."
John Carroll took a 3-0 lead early, but Capital threatened by driving to the two-yard line on its first possession. But after two running plays netted minus-one yards, Capital attempted a pass on third down.
Brian Robinson ruined the plans with a 12-yard sack and the Crusaders missed a 32-yard field goal.Â
Capital never got into the red zone for the remainder of the day.
It took a while for the Blue Streaks to get rolling on offense. The first six drives of the day yielded six points, with
Matt Danko connecting on a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter and a career long 49-yarder in the second quarter.Â
The Blue Streaks hit paydirt at last when
Anthony Moeglin slipped a shovel a pass to
Danny Disbrow, who weaved through the Crusaders defense for a 39-yard touchdown with 1:05 left to play in the first half.
JCU forced a quick three-and-out, and Danko connected on a 36-yard field goal with one tick left in the half to send the Blue Streaks to the locker room with a 16-0 lead.
The offense founds its groove in the second.Â
Michael Canganelli scored from three yards out to cap an eight-play, 62-yad drive on John Carroll's opening possession. On their next drive, the Blue Streaks scored again as Moeglin connected with
Evan Nugent for a 38-yard touchdown strike.
Canganelli scored his second touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard catch and run from Moeglin, and
Riley Larkin finished the scoring with a two-yard run.
John Carroll (4-1, 3-1 OAC) gained 453 yards on the day, while the defense held Capital to 180 yards, including 78 in the second half. Canganelli had a career high 160 rushing yards on 23 carriesÂ
The defense recorded eight sacks for 63 yards, led by
Adam Thompson (2.5 for -17) and
Jimmy Thomas (2.0 for -11).
Tyshawn Jones came up with two interceptions for 11 yards.
Connor Robinson and
Nate Leopold led the squad with seven tackles apiece.
JCU held Capital quarterback Thomas Wibbeler, who entered the contest ranked second in the nation in total offense, to 162 yards on the day.
The Blue Streaks travel to Ohio Northern next week. Kick off in Ada is set for 1:30 p.m.
